Full-figured Fabulous

With the many changes going on in our nation, probably the last group to still face “acceptable†discrimination is full-figured women.  Like all victims of prejudice, the demand for acceptance and appreciation must come from inside the group itself.  And that starts within each of us, as individuals.  Before we can expect others to recognize our inner and outer beauty and intelligence, and stop treating us like second-class citizens (can you say airplane seats?) – we must stop and claim our own right to be full-figured fabulous in every way.  And perhaps, with the holidays upon us, that starts with a simple, sexy, fashion statement.  (Plus size little black dress anybody?)

We all know that what we wear is really important – nobody would go to a Park Avenue job interview in beat up old jeans, for instance, or show up at the gala of the year without that perfect dress.  Nope, we would dress for success in a great suit with a silk blouse or the perfect satin dress.  This is absolutely no different for plus size women and plus size fashion.  Having a show-stopping plus size little black dress is simply a must.  In fact, no matter what the occasion, making sure that we look fabulous is really important.  We need to claim our own beauty all day, every day.  When we dress to be drop-dead gorgeous, we are saying that our beauty is simply not up for debate. 

Plus size fashion has come a long way, and role models abound.  Everywhere we look, from Queen Latifah to America Ferrara (the Emmy Award winning star of Ugly Betty), the message that beautiful women come in all shapes and sizes is all around us.  In fact, in May of this year, Tyra Banks (a champion for plus size women) and her other America’s Next Top Model judges chose Whitney Thompson to be their show’s first plus size winner.  While some of us might debate that she isn’t truly representative of the size 18 and up world, it is a breath of fresh air to see someone modeling in the fashion industry who isn’t a size two.
