Do you use a wading staff ?
And a wader belt? I just bought neoprene waders and my dad wants me wearing a pfd but i said i dont need them because they are safer then the rest. Thanks.
can you reccomend a wading belt?
I use a wading staff in bigger water or during spring runoff when the water is sort of pushy. Sometimes I take it along but don't use it, other times I leave it behind and wish I had it. If I'm without it and need it, I'll find a stick that I can use instead.
My rule about wading is that I become about 15-20 percent more cautious. I definitely don't take dumb chances and even when I'm pretty sure I can negotiate a particular section, I'll take the long way around. This is for the sake of safety, yes, but also for comfort and convenience -- nothing worse for a day of fishing than getting drenched or barking your knee on a rock. Also, you can move faster with a stick or staff -- it might mean a few more minutes of fishing. So yeah, get a good staff and learn to use it. Don't pay too much for one, though. I have seen guys use hiking and ski poles. Just put it on a line and let it sit in the water while you're not using it.
PFD? Well, that's you're call -- I don't know what sort of water you're in, but it's good to wear one if you're in a boat in any case. I don't use one while I'm wading.
A wading belt is a wading belt is a wading belt -- even an old leather belt will work. You can find them with attachment loops and stuff like that, but you'll start to see some pretty comical pricetags on them. I use breathable waders, mostly -- do you use a wading belt with neoprene waders? Anyway, as long as it snugs your waders in so that they don't fill up with water if you go down, it's a good wading belt.
