Autism Treatment â Slippery Elm & Constipation
Constipation is a subject that I have talked about frequently. For both adults and children in our society, constipation can be a very big problem. A bowel movement after each meal is the ideal situation but that can seem like a lot. So I encourage my patients to shoot for at least two bowel movements per day. It can be very difficult with children on the spectrum and even with most people, one bowel movement per day is considered good.
There are many issues related to constipation with kids on the spectrum, as I have discussed in previous videos. Lets cover the issue of the child who feels the urgency to have a bowel movement but who has a difficult time doing so. In this case, the stool may just be too hard to pass. Increasing fluid intake could help with this issue. The fluid helps soften the stool in the digestive tract making it easier to pass. Tru Fiber, or other gluten free fiber supplements, can be very effective at adding bulk to stool and making it easier to pass. If you do add a fiber supplement, be sure to increase water intake also.
An herbal remedy that can help with constipation is called slippery elm. Slippery elm makes stool easier to pass by doing what its name implies, making it more slippery and by making the lining of the gut slippery as well. Slippery elm does so by increasing the mucous production in the digestive tract. Slippery elm comes in either bulk powder or capsule form which can be added to water or food for children who cannot swallow capsules. Slippery elm can be found at most health food stores and is very safe and effective. I have used slippery elm and have many patients who use it, young and old.
There is no set slippery elm dose by age or weight. When using slippery elm capsules, generally you want to start with one or two, maybe 3. I have had patients who range in age from 4 to 8 who have used anywhere between 3 and 6 slippery elm capsules to aid in their constipation to make their stool easier to pass. So if your child suffers from constipation but has the sensation to have a bowel movement, increasing fluid intake and adding in some slippery elm could be a very nice remedy.
